Everyone agrees in writing to negotiate in good faith and to stay out of court while that process is underway. It is not the right fit for every case — especially where there is domestic violence, hidden assets, or a party who will not disclose information. If it is appropriate, we will say so. If the case needs litigation, we prepare for that instead.

Contested custody, support, and property issues, plus the court’s calendar, often make the case longer. Legal separation and dissolution are different procedures; we will explain which applies to your facts.

A domestic violence restraining order is a court order designed to protect a person from abuse in a family or dating relationship. In California it can restrain contact, prohibit firearms, order the restrained person out of a shared home, and provide temporary child custody pending a later hearing.
